Ormond Beach is known as the "Birthplace of Speed" due to numerous land speed records set on the hard packed sands during the early 1900's. Car makers such as Ford and Chevrolet tested their machines here. Eventually speedracing moved south down the beach to Daytona Beach, where the National Association of Stock Car Racing was founded in 1947. The world famous Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959.
Every Thanksgiving Day weekend, Ormond Beach hosts several events and activities geared toward racing history and the American love of classic and old automobiles Highlights of the holiday weekend include the Gaslight Parade where antiques cars, modern classics and fire engines parade down main street.
The Antique Auto Beach Races are held here every winter. Original race cars thrill their audience with re-enactments the 1903 beach races. The weekend long event includes a car show, music and fun in Fortunato Park.
